Main & Cherry is a boutique, family owned vineyard and winery based at Main Road, Cherry Gardens in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. Our second vineyard is located just in the McLaren Vale wine region. Together with our estate grown fruit, we source grapes from passionate family growers throughout other parts of the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale, working with an array of fruit; alternative varieties, some very old vines, from different elevations and soil profiles.
Headed up by award winning Michael Sexton (one of the new wave Australian winemakers), his vineyard philosophy is to grow low-yielding grapes that are sustainably farmed.
“We believe in nurturing the soil the best way we can, and do this by building humus levels, biomass and vitality of our soils.
On our home blocks we can best describe our way of managing our vineyards as biological farming”. When it comes to Winemaking, Michael utilises traditional, gentle techniques of hand, shovel and basket press.
“Our wines are made slowly without rushing them, with minimal intervention. Our red ferments often stay on skins for several weeks before basket pressing, while our whites remain on lees for months to build texture and complexity.”
In April 2020, Michael was announced as a Top 50 winemaker finalist in Australia's Young Gun of Wine.
