"We have conditions that allow grapes to ripen slowly and make wines with very good fruit character and expression".
Jacques Lurton, a member of the family known as “Bordeaux royalty”, chose Kangaroo Island for his Australian vineyard because it has a cool maritime climate almost identical to that of Bordeaux.
The Bordeaux-based winemaker should know, having made wine in 25 global wine regions in 10 countries across 60 vintages, becoming one of the world’s most famous flying winemakers and having completed 21 vintages in Australia. His family owns some 30 chateaux in Bordeaux, including the esteemed Chateau d’Yquem.
“When I planted my Islander Estate vineyard on Kangaroo Island it was with a well- defined concept of the wine style I wanted to produce,” Jacques says. “My reasoning was based on the selection of the soil, the climate, the aesthetics of the place, the method of production which does not compromise the quality, and the principle that a high-class wine must be the result of a natural balance of all its components. "We have conditions that allow grapes to ripen slowly and make wines with very good fruit character and expression. I see the island as being like the Bordeaux of South Australia, because it has this amazing variation of terroir, all close to each other but all different.”
With Jacques’ Bordeaux upbringing it is unsurprising that he considers blending of varieties to be a crucial element in creating great wine. In the same way a great chef uses a range of ingredients to make a complex dish, blending provides a winemaker with the opportunity to create a more complete and complex final wine. His Islander Estate wines from “South Australia’s Bordeaux” are medium bodied wines of great elegance and finesse, spending up to three years in barrel and more years maturing in bottle, released only when they are at their optimum to drink. These are wines that are made to last and improve for many years.
