Welcome to Pikes
Neil & Andrew Pike, Owners
Pikes Wines was established in 1984 when Neil and Andrew Pike planted around a hectare of mixed variety vineyard at Polish Hill River on the eastern side of South Australia’s Clare Valley.
The acidic red loam/clay/slate soils of their cool Polish Hill River site have proven to be ideal for viticulture and produce both wines that display a degree of elegance not often found in the Clare Valley.
Since 1984 the Pikes estate has grown to approx.100 ha in size producing around 60,000 cases of wine per annum under the distinctive Pikes label.
Neil & Andrew Pike
Neil Pike is one of Australia’s acknowledged masters of Riesling, the grape variety best identified with South Australia’s magnificent Clare Valley. The region is renowned not only for producing some of Australia’s finest rieslings but also for the unusual capability to at the same time produce some of Australia’s most revered shiraz wines, a product of its elevation and exceptional climate.
Hot days, with more sunshine hours than Bordeaux, followed by cool nights; vineyards at altitudes up to 550m; a vast range of micro-climates in the many tributaries of the Clare Valley and around 20 different soil types create the unique, sublime character of its wines.
Neil’s Traditionale Riesling is his winery’s great strength, climaxing in the finely crafted, restrained, age-worthy The Merle. However, the Traditionale, often outperforms The Merle in its extreme youth as it’s more approachable early, frequently winning show gold medals and even trophies.
Since 1998, Pikes’ Clare portfolio has been augmented by the Adelaide Hills brand Pike & Joyce, a joint venture with the Joyce family that has planted 35ha of vines at Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills, enabling growing of cool climate varieties such as pinot noir and sauvignon blanc.
