Winemaker Neil Pike’s family started a brewing business at Oakbank in the Adelaide Hills back in 1886, while the Joyce family goes back over a century establishing large apple orchards not far away at Lenswood.
The Joyce family also had a small vineyard and it was that which brought the two families together in 1997 to create an exceptional partnership, which has since led to the establishment of 18ha of premium vineyards specializing in cool climate grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gruner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc with smaller plantings of Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Shiraz being trialed for suitability.
The vineyard is very much run “hands on” due to the steep terrain of the site. All the vines are hand pruned and the fruit handpicked with extensive shoot thinning and crop thinning carried out in most years to ensure high quality fruit is produced.

From its highest point of almost 600m above sea level the vineyard possesses the most marvelous vistas – bird’s eye views that are also enjoyed by customers at Pike & Joyce’s cellar door and restaurant, one of the most spectacular in the Adelaide Hills.
The vineyard is very much a “hands on” operation due to the steep terrain of the site that is inaccessible to mechanisation. All the vines are hand pruned and the fruit handpicked with extensive shoot thinning and crop thinning carried out in most years to ensure high quality fruit is produced.
The grapes, once picked, are chilled overnight in the Joyce family’s cold stores nearby before being transported to the Pike family’s Clare Valley winery facility to be made into single vineyard wines that reflect both the season and the elevated vineyards in which they were produced.
