Frewin Ries and Candice Helbig, Proprietors and Winemakers
CRFT sources fruit from nine vineyards across the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. Just two to three tonnes are picked from each block and wines are produced in small batches of about 2000 bottles.
Each wine is made from grapes picked from a single vineyard and every bottle becomes an honest reflection of that one specific location, an untarnished sample of soil and season.
CRFT Wines brings together two life and business partners, New Zealand former flying winemaker Frewin Ries and sixth-generation Barossan Candice Helbig.
Ries started with four years at Cloudy Bay, then vintages in Saint-Emilion and the celebrated Sonoma pinot noir winery of Williams Selyem, then four years at Kingston Estate in South Australia. Since 2009, he has had a contract winemaking business.

Helbig moved to Hardys for eight years as a cellar hand and ultimately winemaker while obtaining her degree in oenology and viticulture from Charles Sturt University. After working at several prominent wineries she started CRFT Wines and its first vintage in 2013.
Candice and Frewin had developed a shared obsession with single vineyard pinot noir and shiraz, but travelling through Austria also cemented their love for the Austrian variety grüner veltliner, then uncommon in the Adelaide Hills. Along with gewürztraminer, these four varieties became the foundation for the first wines released by CRFT Wines.
The pair say growth will come from additional single vineyards rather than increasing the volume of any particular wine. The philosophy stems from Ries’s time at Williams Selyem, where 20 pinots are made each vintage. It is reflected in the labels, which bear a photograph of the soil of each vineyard.
CRFT was named as one of Australian wine doyen James Halliday’s Top 10 New Wineries in his 2016 Wine Companion, with four of their initial wines scoring 95 and 96 points, two at 94 and two at 93.
